@Matt Woods. I can assure you that no one in the Hackney Alliance supports such wastage and that Hackney Unison have been campaigning hard against what you describe and the use of consultants for many years e.g. http://bit.ly/hDDKIJ

Where were these marches when Labour were wasting millions?

Among the things Hackney has spent money on:

    – £13,000 on a fluffy bunny costume to advertise council services
    – £60,000 on sending Headteachers to a “conference” in Arizona.
    – £4m on consultancy services for the local NHS
    – a Town clerk that earns £170,000
    – Five administrators on six-figure salaries
    – THREE “diversity” staff on a total of £225,000
    – Hackney learning trust overspent by £23m on pension liabilities

We know that some cuts are necessary to reduce the annual deficit , but other councils are managing to keep those to a minimum by pooling services, sharing senior staff and reducing administration costs (by, for instance, funding schools directly instead of using an expensive and incompetent middle man like the Learning Trust).

Hackney seem to be going straight for the sensitive areas to make a political point. If all the waste has been cut, senior salaries and councillor expenses cut and we still have to cut services to balance the books, then fair enough, let’s have a debate about the size and role of the state. For now though, Hackney council are using cuts to the poorest as a way of taking on the government.
