About 300 hundred people demonstrated at the Hackney Budget meeting including 50 in the public gallery. Speakers were heard from various campaigns and unions and then after a march around the town hall protestors blocked Mare Street for over 30 minutes. Chants throughout the night included “Whose town hall? Our town hall!” “Shame on you for turning blue!” ” No ifs! no buts! no public sector cuts!”
And in the meeting? The Labour Cllrs spent hours making speeches attacking the idea ( and those few on the Labour benches who have made that argument) that they could do anything but cut services. At the vote every Labour Cllr, including those who oppose making cuts, voted for the budget.
The Budget voted through had precious little on where the cuts are planned and we will now turn our attention to that. As far as the Hackney Alliance is concerned this is, as Churchill said, “..not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
